NEW Training Requirement For 18 To 24 Year Olds: Effective March 1, 2010, all first-time applicants for a Texas Driver License between the ages of 18 and 24 years of age must complete a state-approved, six-hour driver education classroom course before a driver license or driving instruction permit will be issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety. |
Driver Education Class Exclusively for Adults (18 - 24 year olds)
ABC Driving School offers the state-required six-hour adult driver education course for adults 18 to 24 needing a driver license. Programs are provided in classroom and one-on-one formats or on the Internet. Training is available in English or Spanish and in formats to help individuals that have difficulty reading or are complete nonreaders. Upon completion, graduates are provided a state certificate for submission to the Texas Department of Public Safety Driver License Office.
Classes offered Monday thru Saturday.
Obtaining a Texas Driver License (For Adults Over 25 Years of Age)
To obtain a Texas Driver License, a person must first pass basic knowledge tests over Texas road signs and rules of the road before an in-car road exam can be taken. For persons interested in learning to drive, an instruction (learner’s) permit may be obtained by passing the same tests over the signs and rules of the road. The knowledge exams can be taken at your local Texas Department of Public Safety Driver License Office or at a licensed driver training authorized to train and test students in-house.
To prepare for these knowledge exams you have two options:
| |
Option 1 – Applicants may choose to complete the same adult driver education classroom class as offered to 18 to 24 year olds described above. The class includes the state knowledge exams at the school site. (Click here for information on course options & schedules.)
Option 2 – An applicant can obtain a copy of the Texas Driver Handbook from a local DPS Driver License Office or from our school. This handbook contains the basic information that applicants will be quizzed over in the DPS exams. Handbooks are available in English or Spanish and are free of charge to the public.
Applicants should review the handbook chapters and then study the 84 review questions listed in the Appendix B section in the back of the book (page B-1). The questions also list the chapters where the correct answers can be found. After studying and learning this information, the applicant may then take the written exams at the nearest DPS driver license office and request an instruction permit or the in-car road test to receive an unrestricted driver license. |
Behind-The-Wheel Training Courses
ABC Driving School offers excellent in-car instruction programs which provide practical behind-the-wheel driving experience for beginner or intermediate drivers. We provide individualized plans of instruction that are designed to fit each student's personal needs. Our instructors are licensed by the state and are extensively trained in up-to-date methods of driver education.
We offer private, in-car lessons in late model, dual-controlled cars. Our instructors can pick you up at your home or work and return you after your lesson or you can choose to meet your instructor at the school to save the pick up fee (restrictions apply). Your lessons will be scheduled at a time most convenient for your busy life-style. The number of lessons required will depend upon the type of instructional program you need.
Courses available are:
| BEGINNER - Student having little or NO driving experience. |
| |
Program: Six (6) Hour Course
Four (4) lessons of ninety (90) minutes each. Emphasis is placed on vehicle control, elementary driving and collision avoidance. This amount of training is usually sufficient to qualify for the state in-car road exam; however, the final decision to test is made by both student and instructor. Practice driving with a friend or family member is generally recommended after one or two lessons and will greatly assist the novice driver to gain the experience needed to drive and pass the road test.
The tuition for the 6 hour program is $380.00.* (*Tuition for the program is $340.00 if the student meets the instructor at the school to start and end lessons.) |
